But Laurent’s expression had shuttered quickly. Damen’s view, half-truncated by the short chain at his neck, had been enough to see that. Laurent had stopped dead the moment he had seen Damen, his face turning white, as though in reaction to a slap or an insult. Not that Damen looked “arrogant and unpleasant” but I bet he was fairly self-absorbed in a way, and spoiled. We know how ignorant Damen was about the world before this, living in a world of privilege. This is a few lines after the first moment up above, and all it takes is the look on Laurent’s face for Damen to judge him – which I love about a lot of couples because later they realize the other person is nothingas they thought they were and they were sooo wrong.Īlso, what’s interesting to me is that before all this, how Damen describes the look on Laurent’s face is probably close to how Damen looked as well. Here we get a real first impression from Damen, and it isn’t pleasant. Self-absorbed and self-serving, raised to overestimate his own worth and indulge in petty tyrannies over others. Obviously that attraction is dulled like 2 seconds after this because of obvious reasons, but still. Before Laurent even opens his mouth, he has Damen’s attention, and attraction. Okay, this is the very fist time Damen ever sees Laurent.
